Low Income Students Learning How to Navigate College

I encourage you to associate yourself with people who think the same way you do. Try to find the people who make the environment you are in feel like home, but do not be afraid to meet new people especially when you go to a college where you do not know anyone. This will be a place where you will be able to find yourself, but you have to make sure you stay true to yourself. Do not let all the distractions and temptations around you distract you from your goals and focus on school because this eduction system is so fast paced that the moment you slack  you are already behind everyone else. It's going to be a tough journey both academically and environmentally. Make sure you go out and seek help when you are in need of it. As a first generation college student, you need to associate yourself with all of your professors, go to their office hours, and have them get to know you. I know it is going to be tough because lectures here are going to be ten times bigger than the classes you took back in high school. The pace is fast in every way, the note taking is difficult because of the speed the professors have. There are different workshops you can attend that will help you, some are:

  • Test Taking Skills Workshops

  • Note Taking Workshops

  • Writing Workshops
